Hypromellose is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used as an ophthalmic lubricant, as well as an excipient and controlled-delivery component in oral medicaments, found in a variety of commercial products.

Uses

  • As a food additive, hypromellose is an emulsifier, thickening and suspending agent, and an alternative to animal gelatin.

Cautions

Hypromellose should be used with caution in:

  • Wearers of soft contact lenses. These should be removed before medication is administered, and there should be a delay of at least 15 minutes before putting the contact lenses back in.

It should not be used where there are:

  • People with allergy to hypromellose or any of its ingredients
