- As an emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products
- As a treatment of constipation
Benefits
- Methylcellulose is used to relieve constipation (difficulty with bowel movements).
- It is a type of substance called a hydrophilic (water-loving) colloid which absorbs water to form a soft gel, acting as a bulk-forming laxative.
- It is used to relieve constipation by absorbing large quantities of water in the gut and so increasing the volume of the faeces. This has the effect of stimulating the muscles of the bowels to work and push the faeces out.
- In general this drug is used to relieve constipation by increasing the volume of faeces, but it is also used to soften hard faeces. Another less common use of this medication is in the treatment of obesity in conjunction with other measures (it may reduce food intake by making people feel full-up).
- Benefits of being on this drug can include regular bowel movements and softening of hard stools.
