Benzalkonium Chloride is essentially used to stop the development of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. BAC has antiseptic and disinfectant properties, and can also be used as a detergent.

Uses
- It has three main categories of use: as a biocide, a cationic surfactant, and as a phase transfer agent.
Benefits
- Benzalkonium chloride is a frequently used preservative in eye drops; typical concentrations range from 0.004% to 0.01%. Stronger concentrations can be caustic and cause irreversible damage to the corneal endothelium.

Cautions
- Benzalkonium chloride liquid is flammable. Do not store or use near an open flame
- Do not apply benzalkonium chloride liquid over large areas of the body.
- Do not use benzalkonium chloride liquid more than 3 times per day or for longer than 1 week without checking with your doctor.
- If you use topical products too often, your condition may become worse.
- If your symptoms do not get better within 7 days or if they get worse, check with your doctor.
- If you touch the cold sore or fever blister, wash your hands immediately with warm water and soap. Do not touch your eyes, genitals, or other parts of the body before washing. It is possible to transfer the virus to other parts of the body.
- Ask your doctor or dentist before using benzalkonium chloride liquid in CHILDREN younger than 2 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using benzalkonium chloride liquid while you are pregnant. It is not known if this medicine is found in breast milk after topical use. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use benzalkonium chloride liquid, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
